A new Gold Coast family fishing competition has the active support and endorsement of local media identity, Channel Nine host and fishing expert, Paul Burt.

The ‘Gold Coast Fishing Classic’ will be staged in conjunction with the inaugural Southport Boat Show in September and will be open to all anglers across the coast with a range of cash prizes and fishing products up for grabs. Paul Burt said that he is keen to see the competition get started this year and is confident that over the next five years it will rival some of the largest fishing comps in Australia.

'The Gold Coast has so many different fishing options for people and it will be easy for people to be involved. It makes a lot of sense for us to develop this competition so it is affordable for all of the family to be involved. We have sponsors already locked in for this year with contracts being looked at now for 2010 and beyond. People can see the opportunities and they are excited.'

Event organizer, Bob Carroll from Australian Events said that the fishing competition will be held in conjunction with the inaugural Southport Boat Show to be staged at Parklands on Smith Street, an event that is attracting solid interest from a range of major boating manufacturers and retailers.

'The venue is first class and we will set it up in such a way that anglers can ‘drive through’ to drop off their catch to be weighed. This is a first for any fishing comp and it will allow more people to get involved and it will be so easy for them to deliver their catch, particularly as Parklands is only a few minutes drive from the Broadwater.

'We will have Mosseys Supertank Fishing Show set up next to the ‘drive in’ point and officials will be doing the weigh ins right there. It’s going to be a real eye opener and a lot of fun.'

To register for the fishing competition go to www.southportboatshow.com.au and follow the links to Gold Coast Fishing Competiton or phone Doug Burts Fishing Tackle World in Ladrador on 55 32 0679.

The Southport Boat Show will open daily from 9am at Parklands on Smith Street, Southport. To get there take the Parklands exit, North Street off the Gold Coast Highway or take exit 66 off the Pacific Highway.
