Lead Story

Youth Worlds Gold for Meech

Racing at the2009 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships concluded in Buzios, Brazil on July 18th. The NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team came away with a Gold medal for Sam Meech, a fourth place in the Girl’s 420 and fifth place overall for team performance.

All members of the NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team finished in the top ten of their respective fleets.

Sam Meech completely dominated the Laser Radial Boy’s class from start to finish wrapping up the event with a huge 31 point margin over his nearest rival. Meech now has two Youth World Championship medals under his belt adding this year’s gold to a bronze in Denmark in 2008.
“It has been a pretty good event for me. Everything just fell into place nicely,” says Meech. “Buzios is a great venue and the regatta has been fun. I’ve met a lot of great people too.”

Yachting New Zealand’s Marty Watson says that Meech was an inspiration. “Sam won the hearts of the competitors and the coaches, and everyone here in Buzios. He demonstrated great sailing skill and great sportsmanship.”

Other New Zealanders to have won Gold at the Youth World Championships in the Boy’s single-handed class include Russell Coutts in 1981, John Irvine in 1983, Stuart Bannatyne in 1989, Dean Barker in 1990, Dan Slater in 1994 and Simon Small in 1996.

Just missing out on the medals was Girl’s 420 pair Alexandra Maloney and Bianca Barbarich-Bacher who lifted to fourth place overall  after the final race just sailed. Conditions today were much the same as yesterday with an ENE breeze of 15-18 knots.

“Alexandra and Bianca sailed extremely well in the last two days,” says Marty Watson. “They moved up to fourth place but weren’t able to reel in a medal. They excelled in the breeze and they’ll go on now to the 420 World Champs in Lake Garda with a lot of confidence.”

The NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team was fifth in the team standings with the Volvo Trophy for national team performance going this year to France. “We finished fifth overall for the team performance – still a pretty good result after a couple of days that didn’t go so well for us in the very light marginal sailing breeze early in the regatta,” says Watson.

Rachel Basevi finished the event in 9th place in the fleet of 39 competing in the Girl’s Laser Radial, reportedly sailing well in the fleet of 39.  In the windsurfing classes Lucy Driver was eighth and Ben Mackay was 10th.  “Lucy was a real surprise package for us, lifted to eighth overall exceeding our expectations,” says Marty Watson.

Other double-handed sailors Ben Goodwin and Logan Dunning-Beck finished in eighth with a second place in the final race. And multihull duo James Turner and Marcus Hansen also finished the regatta in eighth place.

High Performance & International

SPARC’s Performance Grants to Increase

SPARC have just announced increases to grants provided to elite athletes, including sailors, through their Performance Enhancement Grants (PEGs) support. Multi year grants have also been introduced for the highest performing athletes – particularly medal winners.

New PEGs criteria will see higher grants given to athletes competing in Olympic disciplines, rewarding performance for achievement at World Championships and the Olympic Games. SPARC’s goal is to provide top performing Olympic athletes with enough support to maximise their potential by dedicating more time to training and competing.

Under the new PEGs criteria, a world champion in an Olympic discipline will get a $60,000 grant, up from the $40,000 given previously. A medallist in an Olympic discipline will get $55,000, up from $35,000 previously.

SPARC General Manager High Performance Martin Toomey said the increases were being made following feedback from Olympic sports. "When we spoke to athletes, coaches and those running high performance programmes there was unanimous agreement around the impact PEGs have had on the improved performance we have seen from New Zealand athletes over recent years," Toomey says.

"However there was recognition that the previous levels weren’t adequate to provide athletes with enough support to maximise their performance, and we’re hopeful these changes will go some way to improving that," Toomey says.

"They also asked for greater flexibility so that PEGs grants could be paid over a number of years. This means world class athletes having a lighter competition year to recharge will still be eligible, and we hope those sports in danger of losing top athletes to other disciplines will be in a better position to retain them."

This is great news for sailors campaigning for the 2012 Olympic Games who will now get even greater rewards from SPARC when they achieve on the world stage. The new approach is very much in line with recommendations made by Yachting New Zealand to SPARC. There are greater rewards for achievement at pinnacle regattas, and more flexibility in applying some funds to areas of particular performance improvement or recognition.

Purdie leads OK Dinghy Worlds

Wellingtonian, Karl Purdie is on track to defend his OK Dinghy World Championship Title in Kalmar, Sweden. Purdie has the lead after six races sailed over the last three days with just two days to go.

Two more kiwis are competing with Greg Wilcox sitting in 6th place overall and Julian Bishop – a club mate of Purdie’s at Worser Bay – in 63rd place.

Points are close amongst the three out front with Purdie just two points clear of Thomas Hansson-Mild of Sweden with Jørgen Lindhardtsen of Denmark a further two points behind. 72 boats from ten nations are competing for the 2009 OK Dinghy World Title including six former world champions. Ten races in total are scheduled with two more days remaining before the title is decided.

Overnight in Sweden two races were sailed in flatter water and lighter breeze on what was day three of the regatta. NZL took the gun in both races, with Greg Wilcox winning his first race at this event, and Purdie adding a third race win to his score sheet.

Check the full results and news on the regatta website.

Greg Wilcox (Pictured at left) has bowed out of the role as President of the International OK Dinghy Association handing over to Andre Blasse.

"It has been a privilege to be President of OKDIA,” says Wilcox. “During my four year term we have introduced the 'Hall of Fame', which recognises the input of those who developed the class in its early days and celebrates the successes of all the great sailors who have and are still sailing the OK Dinghy today".

"We have seen a significant increase in the number of new boats being built in the last four years, which has stimulated the second hand boat market and encouraged many new faces to experience the joys of sailing an OK Dinghy".

Current World Champion, Karl Purdie, said "It was the reason I moved into OKs, as Wilcox, World Champion in 2002, was the role model I was looking for to improve my sailing."

RNZYS team wins Governor’s Cup

A team of sailors from the RNZYS Youth Training Programme has won the Governor’s Cup sailing to victory in the 43rd US International Junior Match Racing Championship. The regatta, sailed in California, concluded on July 19th.

The RNZYS team included skipper William Tiller, main Harry Thurston and bow Shaun Mason.  The team, representing the RNZYS Lion Foundation Youth Training Programme, sailed a fantastic series only losing one race in the double round robin to the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and one race in the finals versus Newport Harbor Yacht Club.

Their coach Guy Pilkington, Training Manager of the RNZYS Lion Foundation Youth Training Programme, was extremely pleased with the result. “The guys sailed really well throughout the entire series, they adjusted to the new boats and conditions quickly and we are very pleased to come away with a great win!”

Two teams represented the RNZYS this week, including an all female team of helm Susannah Pyatt, main Danielle Bowater, bow Taylor Holland.  The ladies finished the round robin in 11th place overall.

The Governor's Cup Regatta was established at Balboa Yacht Club, California, by Chet and Glee Purcell in 1967 after receiving the Deed of Gift form the then Governor of California, the later President Ronald Reagan.  With the Governor's permission a perpetual trophy was established and the first race series was held in August 1967.

49er World Champs

©GT Foto di Gianni Tomazzoni The 49er World Championships concluded in Garda, Italy on July 19th with kiwi’s Peter Burling and Blair Tuke winning the silver fleet.

“We won silver fleet to finish 26th overall. Aussies Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen, who trained with us in NZ in April, are now the new World Champions,” report Burling and Tuke.

“Major sailing highlights – we have good speed and are competitive with the top boats. Winning the last qualifying race in around 18 knots was awesome, including passing the joint overall leading boat on the last downwind to the finish. We’ve really enjoyed the regatta and competing against the world’s best 49er sailors –so much to see and learn.”

“The sailing conditions have been superb. The first three days of the regatta had warm temperatures up to around 30 deg and 12-23 knots of the 'Ora' thermal breeze that arrives in the afternoon. For variety the second part of the regatta was cooler (17-24deg) causing the wind to be off-shore, shifty and big pressure differences over the course.”

“We are so lucky to have Nathan Handley, our YNZ coach on the water, to help us – including helping with repairs.”

“We had been told that new crews don’t make gold fleet in their first year of 49er sailing – well, we came really close. Garda has been such a nice place to have a regatta and we have had heaps of fun and learnt a huge amount.”

Two more kiwi crews were in the line up at the 49er Worlds – Andrew Archibald & David McDiarmid plus Peter Graham & Iain Begg.

Blair Tuke went on to compete in the 29er World Championships following on from the Olympic class skiffs. Crewing for Autralian, and defending world champ, Steven Thomas, the pair sailed to victory by a huge margin.

RS:X Training Camp Manaia

Mount ManaiaRS:X Coach, Dave Robertson, recently organised a training camp which brought together six top female RS:X sailors from New Zealand and Australia. Dave reports on the camp staged at Manaia, Whangarei Heads….

From the 14th-18th July six top female RS:X sailors came together for an intensive training camp in preparation for the World Championships in September. Four New Zealanders (Kate Ellingham, Alice Monk, Justina Sellars, Steff Williams) and two Australians (Jessica Crisp, Krystal Weir) attended the camp held at Whangarei Heads. Facilitated by the RS:X coach Dave Robertson the girls endured eight solid sessions of sailing, a strength and conditioning session with Daniel Lavipour (NZAS) and Jez Fanstone (YNZ), a 420 meter climb up Mount Manaia (in the dark! - pictured at left), an encounter with a pod of killer whales and a blustery 35 knot south westerly on the final day.

Throughout the camp a regatta (named the ‘Manaia World Championships’) was held with a total of eight races. This produced some great battles on the water and provided plenty of discussion around the dinner table where the girls enjoyed the finest of home cooked meals and baking. The eventual winner of the regatta was three time Olympian Jessica Crisp from Australia with Kate Ellingham closely behind in second and Alice Monk in third.

A grateful Jessica Crisp said after the camp was finished “Your girls are getting good fast which is great! We will do the Aussie/ NZ training camp in Australia next time but I don't think it will be as fun as yours.”

The camp proved a real success for the girls who attended and we are looking forward to the ‘real’ World Championships in five weeks time. “The RS:X training camp was a great opportunity to test my progress against Aussie Jessica Crisp, a top performer in the woman’s fleet. Sailing conditions were challenging with shifty winds, providing good practice for Weymouth,” said Kate Ellingham.

Great start to Radial Worlds for Winther

The Laser Radial World Champs have just kicked off in Karatsu, Japan with the first two races on the board. Sara Winther and Jessica Barrell are competing in a total fleet of 87.

Winther has started the regatta well with a 2nd and a 7th to sit in 5th place overall at this early stage of the event.  If conditions allow, twelve races will be sailed in total with the regatta set to conclude and the 2009 World Title in this hotly contested Olympic class to be decided on August 2nd in Japan.

Veronika Fenclova of the Czech Republic and US Olympic Champion Anna Tunnicliffe are tied at the top of the leaderboard after day one of racing. The forecast for tomorrow is for heavy rain with a further two races scheduled. Watch the regatta website for news and results as they become available.

Skiff Action in France

The New Zealand Team18 Foot Skiff sailor Hayden Whitburn has recently returned from Carnac, France where he was competing in the 18 foot skiff Mark Foy Trophy Regatta. There were three kiwi crews in Carnac competing in a fleet of 29.

Here are the New Zealand crew’s final placings…

CTSAILBAT Alex Vallings, Chris Kitchen, Josh McCormack – 14th
JF HILLEB Philip Airey, Murray England, Nick Catley – 15th
MAERSK Graham Catley, Hayden Whitburn, Riley Dean -18th

Here’s what Hayden had to say… “We enjoyed this regatta and ended up mid fleet with some very strong competition.”

“We have a lot of work to do in the big fleet racing but as the fleet New Zealand continues to grow we look forward to some good racing on Auckland harbour this year with a full scheduled racing calendar which will help us work towards the JJ Giltinan World Championships in Sydney harbour February.”

Youth & junior Sailing

420 Worlds set to start

Photo by David Kneale/Volvo Ocean Race426 sailors, from 30 countries, are gathering on Lake Garda for the 420 World Championships and Ladies’ World Championships set to get underway. Both NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team 420 pairs – Alexandra Maloney & Bianca Barbarich- Bacher (pictured at the Youth Worlds), and Logan Dunning-Beck & Ben Goodwin, are part of the kiwi contingent.

Close competition is anticipated with the high standard of 420 sailing in evidence at the recent Volvo ISAF World Youth Championships in Buzios, Brazil. Most of the leading teams there will be racing on Lake Garda. But they will also be competing against some seasoned teams who have aged-out of eligibility for the Youth Championships, or narrowly missed out on their country’s selection for one of the two (girls and boys) tickets to Brazil.

Measurement completes on Wednesday 29 July, when a Practice Race will be held. The Qualifying Series will be held on 30 & 31, with a lay day on 1 August. Then any remaining qualifying races and the Final Series will be held from 2 to 5 August, with the Prizegiving and Closing Ceremony on Wednesday 5 August.

Competition will take place from 8-17 July across eight events, open to competitors younger than 19 years on 31 December 2010.

Istanbul 2010 will be the first time the championship has been held in Turkey, the 23rd nation to host the event. It will also be the first Youth Worlds to consist of eight events, with the new Open High Performance Dinghy – 29er event set to make its debut.

The full line up of events and equipment is:

Boy’s One Person Dinghy – Laser Radial
Boy’s Two Person Dinghy – 420
Boy’s Windsurfer – RS:X
Girl’s One Person Dinghy – Laser Radial
Girl’s Two Person Dinghy – 420
Girl’s Windsurfer – RS:X
Open Multihull – Sirena SL16
Open High Performance Dinghy – 29er

The venue for the championship will be the Atakoy Marina, located on the European Coast of Istanbul at the southern end of the Bosphorus Strait. The Marina falls within the Bakirköy district of Istanbul, and is very well connected being just 8km from Atatürk International Airport. In 2010 Istanbul will also be the joint European Capital of Culture.

The racing area will be the Marmara Sea. The predominant wind conditions in July are winds from the north east at a speed between 10 and 15 knots. Temperatures vary between 25ºC and 30ºC during the day and around 20ºC at night time. The sea water temperature in the summer is between 23ºC and 25ºC.

Opti North Americans

A team of four young kiwis coached by Andrew Wills recently competed at the 2009 Optimist North American Championships in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.

The team included Jayvee Buchanan from Christchurch, Olivia Mackay from Napier, Trent Rippey from Tauranga and Mahia Pepper from Auckland. The event was held with prevailing trade winds of 2- 15knts, sailors reporting that the wind would swing from offshore in the morning to onshore trades in the afternoon with 2-4m swells sweeping into St Andrews Bay.

The series included eleven races with two drops. The best placed of the kiwis in final results was Jayvee in 13th place. Olivia was 18th, Trent 33rd and Mahia 86th in the total fleet of 198 sailors.

Olivia sailed with consistency throughout winning two races and finishing as second girl overall. On day one Jayvee capsized with flat airbags and nearly sunk; then had an OCS on the second day putting him on the back foot right away. Only after eleven races was he able to get two drops and climb right back up the ladder, finishing top kiwi.

Mahia who was already suffering from a heavy cold, got sea sick in the large swells throwing up on the finish line in one race. This seemed to shift his focus from winning to just finishing with his lunch where it should be. Trent was also nauseas on the third day but more consistent finishing 33 overall.

After acclimatizing to the heat, the biggest challenge for the sailors was the starts where everyone was aggressive and protecting your gap was more of a challenge. After the first day racing coach Andrew Wills sat the sailors down to talk about starting with a noticeable improvement on the second day.

Growth and Planning at Paremata Boating Club

The future of Wellington’s Paremata Boating Club is looking bright having recently experienced a sustained period of membership growth as well as creating and adopting a comprehensive yet straight forward Strategic Plan. The Club has agreed for this Strategic Plan to be published by Yachting New Zealand and it is available to view now on our website. Click here.

John Grace of Paremata Boating Club had an integral role and he provides some insight into their unique circumstances and the planning process.

“Paremata was a strong club in previous years. The Easter Regatta was attended by sailors from all over the country, and several of our sailors achieved international success. Over the last 30 years, membership and the competitiveness of our sailors steadily dropped. About four years ago, it seemed that were losing the ability to even raise a fleet. At that time, we had juniors learning to sail, but very few would remain with the club more than a season afterwards,” says John.

“Since then, numbers have increased again (from about 40 to 132 at last count) and we have a junior fleet of between 20 and 30 boats who regularly attend training evenings, although they are not yet competitive. In previous years, juniors who do well tend to go to other clubs for the training opportunities that we've been unable to give them.”

Last year the Club made a decent profit, but they resisted the urge to rush out and spend. “My concern was that now that we have some money, and a fleet of juniors, we should make use of a situation that may not come again. We needed to develop the club, so that when somebody visits us in three to five years time, they can see the difference that that money has made.”

“That was why we wrote the Strategic Plan.”

“One matter I would like to emphasis is that other clubs shouldn't just copy this plan, or some other precedent. The planning process is the most important part - more important than the piece of paper you come out with. If anyone wants to discuss this more, I am happy to do so,” offers John.

The Paremata Boating Club acknowledges the support of Chris Ineson, Wayne Holdt (NZCT Regional Support Officer) and Yachting New Zealand’s Chief Executive Des Brennan for the help, suggeswtions and encouragement.
