Leg 3 of the Baltic Sprint Cup has been completed by two yachts.
As the sun came up over the Latvian port of Liepaja this morning two boats vying for position at the front of the Baltic Sprint Cup fleet swept across the line at the Latvian Naval Ship Virsaitis ('Chieftain') close offshore within minutes of each other, the honour of a salute from the ship's L/70 Bofors 40mm gun going to Utsider sailed by her young crew from Warnemuende.
After fighting the whole race Utsider passed Scho-Ka-Kola 300 meters from the finish and reversing the results of leg 1.
This leg saw the westerly wind soften at first, then increase to a steady 18-20 knots allowing for fast passage speeds.
Yachts arriving from Vaestervik this morning rejoined others who had sailed directly to the Latvian port after helping in the SAR incident near Bornholm on leg 2.
Leg 3 Start report.
At noon on the 24th July, Västervik mayor, Harald Hjaimarsson with ISAF president, Goran Petersson watching, shot the starting gun that sent the Baltic Sprint Cup fleet off on the third leg of their series and bound for Liepaja, Latvia. The westerly winds allowed the boats to set their spinnakers as they rounded a windward mark and turn to their course for the south end of Gotland Island.
From there the course is due east to Liepaja. The first boats to complete the 170 nautical mile leg are expected to arrive midday tomorrow. It is anticipated that all boats will be across the finish line by 6 pm tomorrow afternoon, in time for the festivities of the Liepaja Sea Festival.
