Neat leads Contender Pre-Worlds at Travemuende Week

by Andreas Kling on 20 Jul 2009 120th Travemuende Week and the heat is on after the start of the Contender Pre-Worlds with Australian Champion Jono Neate ahead of Jan von der Bank (Kiel, Germany), whilst former World Champion Andrea Bonezzi (Italy) was hurt when he capsized and lost three teeth.

The Russian brothers Mikhail and Maxim Sheremetiev dominate the Olympic 470 class after the first weekend of the 120th Travemuende Week. But the single handed Finn Dinghys and Laser saw young local heroes from Germany leading on Sunday (19 July).

Light to medium Westerlies blow on the Baltic Sea off Luebeck-Travemuende and all seven race officers reported 'snakes and ladders' all over the courses. 'It was pretty tricky out there with wind shifts up to 30 degrees right at the start', said 2005 Contender World Champion von der Bank, 'luckily I survived with a fifth in the second race when I rounded the top mark not better than 15th.' But everybody was looking on Bonezzi when the fellow competitor crossed the line in sixth position. Blood flew out of his mouth and he was towed back into the harbour.

Three bullets in a row were the score of the day for the entire fleet competing in the 120th jubilee of Travemuende Week. The Sheremetiev brothers sailed faultless races after being beaten by the Danish female crew Henriette Koch and Lene Sommer only once the day before. Rank three is currently hold by Vitaliy Mashkovsyy and Sergii Polishchuk from The Ukraine.

Germany’s Olympic hope in the Finn Dinghy class, Jan Kurfeld, fought back on Sunday overtaking the Dutch Karel von Hellemond by one point. His compatriot Gert van der Heijden is third 8 points short. Russian Sergey Kamissarov missed to keep up with the pace of Frithjof Schwerdt from Germany. The latter lead the score board by ten points now.

Racing continues on Monday (20 July) with fresh breeze forecasted.
