Harrison Advanced Rods Summer Series at Liverpool Yacht Club

by Richard Baldwin on 13 Jul 2009
SW
Liverpool Yacht Club held the third race in the Harrison Advanced Rods Summer Series on Sunday July 12th.

With many yachts away at Dun Laoghaire there were nine entries in the combined class 2 fleet. Race Officer Andy Freeney set an interesting course with an innovative start using the southern start line so that there was a short beat from the start to round Pilkington to Port.

Race Series sponsor Steve Harrison in his Sigma 33 Quattro made an excellent start followed by Mick Ryan in JLS. The remainder of the fleet progressively starting further from the line and consequently had a longer beat. The next leg was a 'fine' reach to E2 the leaders didn’t fly their spinnakers but Tango and Skukusa did and made up some ground.

The next leg was a long beat against the tide from E2 to G1 which proved crucial as Quattro powered ahead and managed to reach the mark before the wind died and veered for a period which enabled them to establish a commanding lead. JLS was still holding off Tango with Skukusa further behind. With slightly weaker and variable wind Race Officer Andy Freeney decided to shorten the course after further downwind upwind legs to remove an additional cross river leg.

The above positions were maintained until the last leg when Skukusa managed to eventually overhaul Tango to take the third line honours position behind JLS.

After handicap adjustments Steve Harrison’s domination was clearly apparent with a winning margin of 732 secs over second place Richard Baldwin’s Tango who was 208 seconds ahead of Stuart Lofthouse’s’ Skukusa.
