Johal eyes 2012 Olympics medal

After a disappointing show at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Major Nachhatar Singh Johal is working hard to get a sailing medal for India at the 2012 Olympics. He is off to Europe at the end of May and said he was happy that the Army Yachting Node — where he is currently employed — is finalising his long-term coach under the Indian Army’s Mission Olympics programme.

Asked about his experience at Beijing, Johal said, 'There were a lot more positives for me, as compared to negatives. Sailing is a sport where India can do really well.

'It is more of a mind game as India have done well in the international arena in yachting. If a structured programme and support system is created we can perform reasonably well in the Olympics.'

He also said that in the 2008 Olympics there was lack of a long-term plan. But the funding from the Army had helped him in more ways than one as he has got himself a personal trainer, who has helped him in strength training and overall fitness.

Johal is currently the highest-ranked Indian at 44 in the ISAF rankings of fleet racing. He has got approval from the Army to participate in the Kieler Woche (Olympic classes) in Germany.

'Sailing with the Australian number 2 Finn sailor Brendon Casey in Mumbai was quite a learning experience. I am committed for the next four years to an Olympic campaign and will stick to it.

'My aim during the 2008 Olympics and now are totally different. Last time my goal was to participate while this time around it is to get a medal home. I plan to participate in 12 to 15 international events this year to gain more exposure.'
