South Staffs Firefly Open Meeting

Sunshine and blue skies greeted the 14 competitors for the South Staffs Firefly Open Meeting on May 10 following the previous day’s exciting team racing. After a one-hour postponement the race officer managed to get the first race under way in light and shifty conditions.

Chris Warburton and Alison Norbury had great upwind speed and though John and Sue Billington and Keith and Chloe Macaulay worked hard, they could not catch them.

Kris and Cora Kenmuir-Hogg took advantage of the wind swinging during initial stages of the second race and led for the first two legs.

They took the Billingtons high on the second reach allowing team Macaulay and Chris and Alison through to leeward. After close racing the Macaulays held on to win.

This left three boats in contention for the overall title.

After a good start and first beat, Alistair Macaulay and Isobel Leroux rounded the windward mark first and held this for most of the race, while the Billingtons, Chris Warburton & Alison Norbury and Keith and Chloe Macaulay battled it out behind them with regular place changes.

Team Billington finally got through with two legs to spare, won the race and with it the event.
