Maritimo 2023 S600 LEADERBOARD

A Tiller the Winner for Farr 40 racer

by Georgie Brown on 17 Mar 2002
The final day’s sailing (Sunday, March 17, 2002) of the Rosemount Estate Farr 40 One Design Regatta promises to be a thriller with only four points separating the top four boats

The three day event, is hosted by the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and was sailed on the Circle off Palm Beach. The ‘trophy’ is the owner’s designated weight in Rosemount Estate wines.

“It’s on tomorrow”, said Richard Perini, who Australian Class President of the Farr 40 OD Association. “While the first four boats having only four points
between, any one of the first eight boats of the twelve boat fleet have a chance of a win.”

On another near perfect day of sailing with steady North Easterly breezes and smooth seas, Richard Perini, owner driver of the Farr 40 Corinthian Doors took the lead on points after Day 2 of the Regatta.

He is one of the few Farr 40 owners who uses a tiller. “ I have sailed with a tiller nearly all my life, he said, “I think there is more ‘feel’ and it is better up wind.”

While yesterday’s leader, Marcus Blackmore (Emotional Hooligan) had a “reality check” with a 2nd, 8th and 7th , (it just wasn’t’ our way today), Michael and Bill
Quinn (Truant) were celebrating their first win ever in the Farr 40 OD Class. With tactician Jamie Wilmot on board, Truant crossed the line six seconds ahead of
Marcus Blackmore in the fourth race of the series. Is this a change in the tide for the Quinns who as regular competitors, are more often mid to tail enders in the fleet? “We’ll see,” said Michael Quinn.

The final two races in the series will be sailed tomorrow (Sunday March 17) on the Palm Beach Circle, followed by the presentation of the winners prize in
Rosemount Wines. Prizes will be presented by the former CEO of Rosemount Wines, Bob Oatley.
