Malta’s very own SuperSport world champion Aaron Ciantar and Hull manufacturer Chaudron scooped the top prizes at the Powerboat P1 World Championship awards ceremony held on Thursday night at The Corinthia St.George’s Bay Hotel.

On the eve of the opening Grand Prix of the Sea for 2009, the powerboating world’s glitterati toasted a sensational sixth season of action before the serious business begins with Friday’s qualifying feast: The PowerPole.

Picking up the shimmering trophy, a grinning Charlie Ciantar was delighted with 2008’s unprecedented run of results. 'All of last year’s hard work really paid off with a fantastic season for us. We had a good understanding within the team and were all very determined to win trophies and races. '

Charlie’s star-studded pupil and son, Aaron, paid tribute to Chaudron saying, 'It’s very special for our family company to claim the trophies on home soil. It makes last year’s achievements all the more important, especially with the 2009 season beginning in Malta.'

Now racing the Ukranian Seagull with partner Angelo Tedeschi, Aaron believes Chaudron’s latest creation is superior to last year’s all-conquering Conam Yachts, adding 'I hope we can continue our dominance in the SuperSport class in 2009.

'It would be a perfect way to finish as world champions in our last year of SuperSport.'

The biggest cheer of the night went to Khiron and Scuba, who were deservedly rewarded with the Sergio Carpentieri Spirit of P1 trophy, thanks to their arduous efforts while salvaging the Sunseeker Challenger, which dramatically nosedived and sank during practice in Marseille.

Another smashing piece of drama from France’s Cote d’Azur, the collision between Cigarette Racing Team Europe and Honeyparty.com, was named as the Powerboat P1 Moment of 2008, illustrating Powerboat P1’s unique camaraderie in its full glory.

Elsewhere, James Sheppard stole the limelight in the Evolution class, collecting gongs on behalf of the Fountain hull and Ilmor engine manufacturers respectively from the evening’s distinguished guest, Malta’s Parliamentary Secretary for Youth & Sport, Clyde Puli.
