A high speed spin-out on their first practice lap of the morning has ended Maritimo 12’s Class 1 debut. The raceboat spun out of the water, re-entering backwards and flooding their engine bay.
Although they showed much promise on day two of the weekend, following sensor problems on day one, Peter McGrath and Giorgio Manuzzi will be bitterly disappointed with how the weekend has turned out. After landing safely on the pontoon, a relieved McGrath said: 'We went for a spin. I don’t think there is a hole in her, we went in fast backwards and water came over the back.'
The raceboat has been suffering from steering problems all weekend, having spun on day two of the weekend. 'She leads you into the corners, you think you have control, next minute she’s gone,' added McGrath.
Maritimo Australia team principal, Bill Barry-Cotter said: 'We have a handling problem we can’t sort through. We did a test in Australia and all seemed fine, but we shipped it over here and we have a slightly shallower rudder. We can only resolve this by having time in the water. It is frustrating because we have straight line speed, it is all there, it is just getting the boat round the corners where we are having a bit of trouble.'
