Along with all the sailing enthusiasts, US Sailing will greet the teams and take part in all the exciting activities and events at the Volvo Ocean Race’s sole North American stopover in Boston Harbor’s world-class waterfront destination at Fan Pier. The Race Village at the Fan Pier Boston Port Stopover opens this Saturday, April 25 and runs through Saturday, May 16. US Sailing is proud to announce they will be on-site from start to finish.
US Sailing is hosting 'Olympic Night with the US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics' on May 13 at 6 p.m., in the Race Village at Fan Pier Boston. Seating is limited and based on a first come, first serve basis. This event will feature Chairman of the Olympic Sailing Committee, Dean Brenner; two-time Olympian, Tim Wadlow (49er class); and 2008 Paralympic gold medalist, Maureen McKinnon-Tucker (SKUD 18 class). They will be speaking about the success at the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games and future plans for the 2012 Games. The event is open to the public and registration is free at https://secure.ussailing.org/ussis/register/index.asp?eventid=421219.
US Sailing encourages everyone attending the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover at Fan Pier Boston to visit the US Sailing booth to learn more about our products, programs and services. Join or renew your membership at the US Sailing booth and receive your choice of either the Handy Guide to the Racing Rules of Sailing or Dave Perry’s Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing. US Sailing is the official sponsor for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Co-Ed National Championship Semifinals on May 2-3, hosted by MIT and Harvard. US Sailing is sponsoring a dinner on May 2 at 5:30 p.m. that features speaker Ken Read, skipper of Team Puma.
'On behalf of everyone at US Sailing, we are excited to introduce several of our team’s finest sailors, who have amazing stories to share,' said executive director of US Sailing, Charlie Leighton. 'I especially look forward to introducing American sailing icon, Ken Read, to the talented young sailors representing 36 college sailing teams.'
The Volvo Ocean Race started on October 11, 2008 in Alicante, Spain. The race covers nearly 37,000 nautical miles of the globe’s most treacherous seas, with stops in 11 ports around the world. The teams still competing in the Volvo Ocean Race are projected to finish Leg 6, a 4,900 nautical mile trip from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Boston on April 26-28. During the stopover, the teams will compete in the Broad Sound in-port race on May 9. The Volvo Ocean Race resumes on May 16 when the teams set sail for Galway, Ireland on Leg 7.
