Hobart sailor Rob Gourlay and the crew of Tas Marine Construction have taken out the Hydro Tasmania Three Peaks Race’s inaugural fastest monohull prize. The Thompson 920 was the third boat overall to finish the 21st annual event.
Its running team Donovan Jacka, of Victoria, and Chris Stevens, of southern NSW, completed the final run over Mt Wellington at 10pm, setting a time of three hours 46 minutes.
Gourlay’s crew excelled on the sailing legs in light and fickle winds, sailing through the fleet from ninth position to second between Flinders Island and Coles Bay.
They lost one position on the east coast run when they sent sailor and back-up runner Jeremy Grey onto the course in place of Stevens, who was recovering from sea sickness and dehydration after the first two legs of the race.
But they held their position and their nerve in the windless final sailing leg to finish well clear of the next monohull, the fully-crewed entry Pisces, which is not expected to dock in Hobart until about 11pm tonight.
BWR Multihulls, Sullivans Cove Whisky, Haphazard and Peccadillo are all battling their way up the Derwent River in drifting conditions and should arrive around midnight.
