446 crews from 21 nations at La Marina di Scarlino in Maremma Tuscany are facing off in the Gulf of Follonica during the Italian leg of the Europa Cup. After four races, Marco Gallo of Italy leads in the Standard, Guillaume Girod of Switzerland in Radial and Italian Giovanni Coccoluto in the 4.7 classes.

Sailing conditions have ranged from 18-23 knots form the south yesterday to 10-15 knots from the south east today.

Competitors from Austria, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, San Marino, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine and Italy faced off, literally blanketing the Gulf with white sails. The islands of Elba and Montecristo provided a breathtaking backdrop.

The organizing committee formed by the Club Nautico Follonica, the Club Nautico Scarlino and the Group of Vela Lega Navale Italiana di Follonica placed two race courses:

Course A just in front of the Marina and world renown cove of Cala Violina and course B off the coast of Follonica. Racing began on Friday 27th and will continue through Monday March 30th, with at least two races per day for each class. An event that will literally cover the Gulf of Follonica and the sea of Scarlino with white sails
