2009 Portsmouth Number List released this Weekend

The RYA’s publication of the new numbers for the Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme is a sure sign that another action packed racing season is upon us after a long hard winter.

Change is, however, on the way: the RYA’s introduction of a new web based results service will make the Yardstick a much more fluid system. Clubs that have signed up to the new results analysis system will benefit from continuously adjusted handicaps being returned via the website over the course of the season.

This data will then be drawn together at the end of this year and will be used to draw up the 2010 PN List, more accurately reflecting what is happening on waters up and down the country.

The RYA’s Technical co-ordinator for racing, Bas Edmonds, has been working hard to introduce the new system. He explained:

'This season promises to be the most revolutionary in the Portsmouth Yardstick’s illustrious history. Around 150 clubs have registered interest in the new web based results analysis scheme which, over the coming season, will provide us with much more detailed results and will also afford those clubs the luxury of adjusting handicaps as the season progresses.

'This means that, although we start the season very much ‘as you were’ in terms of Portsmouth Numbers, by the end of the season we will have the most detailed set of results ever collated and that should mean a more accurate handicapping system.'
