Snow-Hansen and Saunders win VW Print 420 NZ Championships at Napier

by Lyle Tresadern on 23 Feb 2009
Bow to Bow start Race 7 VW Print 420 Nationals at Napier Marty Weeks

The VW Print 420 National title goes to Paul Snow-Hansen and Jason Saunders after winning races 9 and 10 they effectively wrapped up the title without having to sail the last race.

Lardies and Drummond sailed consistently during the day to secure 2nd place overall by one point over first female youth sailors Maloney and Babaich-Bacher who were equal on points with the first male youth sailors Dunning-Beck and Goodwin, but claiming third on count back with one extra win on their scorecard.

Race 9
After waiting for the sea breeze to arrive the first race of the day got underway with a clear start in a building 8-12 knot breeze. At the first mark it was a Napier Sailing Club benefit with Mackay and Broome leading and Mannering and Weeks 2nd however this was not to last as Snow-Hansen and Lardies took over with Tauranga sailors Stevenson and Bullock in close attendance.

Positions stayed the same through to the finish with Snow-Hansen claiming his fourth win of the regatta and Lardies coming second to retain second overall. Stevenson and Bullock held onto 3rd from a fast finishing Maloney.

Race 10
Snow-Hansen stamped his authority on the regatta by clearing out with a lead of over one minute at times. The wind held steady at 10- 12 knots from the North East direction. Dunning-Beck and Goodwin steadily improved during the race to claim second with the ever consistent Lardies and Drummond in 3rd.

Race 11

With Snow-Hansen and Saunders already claiming the title they went into cruise mode for the last race which then left Lardies and Drummond, Maloney and Babaich-Bacher and Dunning-Beck and Goodwin all fighting for the minor places. Maloney after a titanic struggle with Dunning-Beck just held on for the win to claim 3rd overall while Lardies finished 9th and dropped this race which still gave him a one point margin to claim second overall. Dunning-Beck and Goodwin ended up fourth on count back with Cooke and Illingworth fifth after fading in the lighter conditions.

Snow-Hansen and Saunders were clear winners with a 12 point margin. This is their second title but both with different crews in previous contests.
