Editorial- Louis Vuitton Pacific Series - Alinghi wins first race

by . on 13 Feb 2009

Welcome to the 16th edition of Sail-World.com's newsletter for the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series

Day 15 of the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series marked the start of the final phase of the competition, the race for the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series Trophy itself.

The wind gusted to 25kts during the first and only race sailed today - about 5kts over the informal wind limit imposed on the event to minimise boat damage. From a southwesterly (offshore) direction, the breeze stayed in all day and in fact increased as the day wore on.

We have full reports and images on the race sailed today, however in such windspeeds the day was notable for the speeds achieved by the yachts - up to 17kts was recorded by Alinghi and 16.5kts by Emirates Team New Zealand - and we have the Virtual Eye graphic images to prove it!

The forecast for tomorrow, is for a SE wind of 13kts turning ENE during the day.

The regatta has been shortened to a best of five series, meaning that Alinghi have to win two more races and Emirates Team NZ have it all before them.

In this issue we feature details of a book that will be published within hours of the finish of the final race tomorrow.

Written by Lynn Fitzpatrick and with images by Jurg Kauffmann the book will be a real collector's item and an outstanding record of an outstanding series. Order your copy now!

In this issue we are also announcing our new sweepstake to win Line 7 clothing. To celebrate the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series New Zealand technical and lifestyle clothing manufacturer Line 7 has teamed with Sail-World to launch an online competition.

We'll be back on the water tomorrow for the final day of racing and will be providing reports and images off the water after the conclusion of each race.

Birds of prey. Insects. All of them airborne? How does it all apply here? Time to find out! All are airborne. The first three are birds of prey. The last one is an insect. All are so completely different. The first three have also had their name, formidable qualities and fantastic reputations applied to fantastic aircraft made by Boeing.

A look at The Ocean Cleanup and its the 30 Cities Program The cliche goes that one should avoid meeting one's heroes, as there's always a chance that the flesh-and-blood person might not live up to expectations. While I've never met Boyan Slat, I'd gladly take this risk.

Double Double
And the rest of the line is not toil and trouble, but quadruple, then another double… On the eve of the 100th Fastnet that has attracted some 464 entries, I heard of one entry in this record fleet that seemed so very apt. Not only because it includes the Commodore of the RORC, but because it combines two Brits and two Aussies.
