NZ Masters Yachting
by Martin Balch on 13 Feb 2002
Strong northerly conditions on Otago Harbour blew out three of the scheduled six races in the Masters Yachting events.
Sailing started on Friday in ideal conditions with an eight knot breeze gradually building to ten knots during the morning
race. Much to the delight of the race officials, all seventy seven yachts that made the start line completed the first race
of the series. The only absentee, a local Farr 6000 trailer yacht that had the misfortune to have its center-plate snag a
pushbike, lying abandoned on the harbour bottom.
Although only three races, were completed, racing was tight and close, despite the Friday afternoon and Saturday morning
races being completed in marginal winds of around twenty to twenty-two knots.
In the Sunburst division, Duendin's team of Peter Nees and Peter Wood enjoyed the rougher condition to win two races after
Alexandra's Murray Shanks and Bryan Hall had won the first race. The ever consistent Roy Roker with crew Jim Godfrey took
third place while Alan Montgomery with his wife Jocelyn back in the forward hand position after a break of a couple of
seasons, improved with every race to finish fourth.
The Topper division was a clean sweep to Macandrew Bay's Neil George in Luna Rosa while the much larger Farr 6000 trailer
yachts were also dominated by Dunedin entries. Alan Sutherland with Alistair Campbell and Graham Hutton crewing in Hot C
Air lost one race only to the fast improving Jeff Mercer in the borrowed Ceol Mara, but were clear winners with Alexandra's
Ross Jones in Tatopani third.
The Zephyr and Hobie Cat classes were both dominated by Canterbury crews with Ron Mackie a clear winner in the monotype
Zephyr from Mike Agnew. Andy Holland improving with every race as the winds increased took third. In the Hobies, Warren
and Dagmar Guy sailing Bad Wind won by just one point from Tim Newman and Phil Frame, reversing their placings in the
National contest recently held on the Harbour.
With the winds increasing steadily on Saturday, the afternoon race was abandoned, and with no sign of the wind easing on
Sunday, and stronger winds forecast, officials were forced to close the contest and declare a result on the three races
completed.
Results from the weekends yachting events.
