Flying Dutchman rounding gybe mark in race 1. Day 1 - Flying Dutchman Worlds, Napier Kevin Hayton

Two races were completed on day 1 of the Flying Dutchman World Championships in Napier, New Zealand. Ian McCrossin and James Cook from Australia won the first and Szabolcs Majthenyi and Andras Domokos of Hungary the second. Both races were completed in six-ten knots of North Easterly breeze.

Race 1 started on schedule at 13:00 hours and Spanish sailors Marco and Roberto Sevila led the fleet to the first top mark. Australian pair Ian McCrossin and James Cook put the gas on and took the lead at mark 3, which they held to take the first bullet of the regatta.

Marco and Roberto Sevilia were second and Gines Remero and Alvaro Moreno (ESP 6) were third. The first Kiwi’s, Paul Scoffin and Pavel Ruzicka (NZL 145) were fourth.

Following one general recall Race 2 got away clean under a Z flag.

Kiwi’s Andrew McKee and Matt Bismark (NZL 111) led at mark 1 hotly pursued by Hungarian sailors and title favourites, Szabolcs Majthenyi and Andras Domokos. Australian sailors Norman Rydge and Richard Scarr (AUS 37) and Gines Remero and Alvaro Moreno followed.

On the final beat to the finish, places continued to change, and the Hungarians took the bullet from the Kiwi’s (NZL 111). American’s Lin Robson and Ian Gregg got through to finish third.

Overall placings see Hungarian sailors Szabolcs Majthenyi and Andras Domokos (HUN 70), in first on equal points with Spanish sailors Gines Remero and Alvaro Moreno in second. The leading New Zealand sailors are Paul Scoffin and Pavel Ruzicka (NZL 145) and they are in third.
