The Flying Fifteen Worlds are being held at the Royal Yacht Club Victoria in Melbourne. The first four days of racing cover the Australian Championships, and the remainder the Worlds.
Daily Overview (Sunday 4th January)
After a postponement and a general recall, today's Invitation Race got underway at 11.20am in a light southeasterly breeze on Port Philip.
It was quite a picture from the signal boat - with around 100 Flying Fifteens battling for position on the starting line. The fleet quickly split though - with the faster Mark IIIs breaking easily away from the older Classics and Silvers.
First around the top mark was Australia's (and Royals' own!) Brian Carroll on Supertoy Play On. And play on he did, winning the invitation race, just ahead of Great Britain's Secret Ingredient X. The first Silver boat to come home was another Australian boat, Trevor Williams' Good Thing, 18th overall. Andy McKee on British boat Feel
Flows took the Classic division.
The breeze continued to build to a beautiful 12-15 knots for the afternoon's race - the first heat of the Australian National Championship (Pre Worlds).
Truly a world event, Britain led the pack at the final top mark, chased by boats from Spain, New Zealand and Ireland. But it was the Spaniard that won the day - Javier Chacartegui's Ffatigaos, the only Spanish entry in the competition. No change in the Silver and Classics from this morning with Good Thing and Feel Flows winning their respective divisions.
