The final round of the UIM World F1 Series offered perhaps the biggest challenge yet faced by the Brisbane based Trask Development Corporation team. While Bob Trask was keen to finish the 2008 series on a high, younger brother David Trask had a chance to improve greatly on his standing in the Drivers Championship.
Going into the final round at Sharjah, David Trask could have finished the series as high as second or at worst sixth.
David Trask qualified in seventh position, Bob took the 19th place on the start dock. At flag fall, David was at his aggressive best charging to the fist turn holding his line and not giving a millimetre to his competitors. On the opening lap David Trask picked up one position while Bob moved up three places in the opening six or so laps.
At the front of the pack Dave Trask was engaging in an enthralling dice with American Jay Price, the newly crowned 2008 UIM F1 champion. David Trask pushed Jay Price hard, until on lap 20, Price slowed and pulled out of the contest. Dave Trask was in fifth position and still racing hard. On the same lap Guido Cappellini, three time world champion, also retired. The pace out front was hot.
By lap 22 of the scheduled 50 lap GP, David Trask had moved up into fourth place and was looking strong. Bob Trask was also doing well moving through the field to take up 13th position. At half race distance Bob Trask was one place closer to the front.
Dave Trask was more than holding his own and running well, when on lap 30 and in fourth place his engine let go. Dave Trask’s 2008 series campaign was over in a split second.
This left Bob Trask circulating on the course to fly the Trask Development Corporation team flag. But as lady luck was not smiling on the Trask brothers this weekend, Bob also retired on lap 39 with hull damage.
While the Sharjah GP was a safe race with no accidents, the big course, flat water and high speeds certainly took their toll with just 12 boats finishing.
'We gave it our best shot with so much to gain,' David Trask said. 'But it just wasn’t our day. We were so close going into the final stanza of the GP, but this sport can be very unforgiving. The DNF is what we posted but not the way we wanted the last round to play out.'
At the conclusion of the 2008 UIM World F1 Series, David Trask finished in sixth position in the Driver’s Championship while Bob was in 16th. Both the Trask brothers improved on their 2007 standings.
'We improved in 2008 over our 2007 results,' Bob Trask said. 'Our objective for 2008 was to be on the podium and amongst the points more than we did in ‘07, so we are happy on this level.'
'The Trask Development Corporation team still believes that we can win the World F1 Championship and we will be leaving no stone unturned in our quest to achieve this in 2009. We will be back, more committed than ever before.'
The first round of the 2009 UIM F1 World Championship is to be contested in Portugal on April 12th 2009. The Australian F1 Superboat series dates have yet to be announced.
