Southern Ocean Takes Its Toll
We took one step north and it was expensive. illbruck to the north east is
just screaming away. Rich get richer.
Damage report this far :
- one spinnaker pole broken and gone
- one spinnaker ripped and repaired
- one cut in a wrist
- one cut in a finger
- one spinnaker pole fitting on the mast broken (out of two)
- bent stanchion
- spinnaker sheet cut into the end of the main boom
- the WTP [special processing unit for sailing data] computer down. No
instruments at the moment.
The old Southern Ocean is taking its toll. We are still in good shape in
this heavy running condition. Max wind is now 42 knots. Storm chute
[spinnaker], small staysail and one reef in the main is up. Icebergs
everywhere. We have constant radar watch and we plot all reported ice. A
couple of minutes ago we went south of 60 degrees.
