Postcard sailing at Phuket Kings Cup

by Rob Kothe on 1 Dec 2008
Phuket King’s Cup 2008, Aquavit 5 Sail-World.com /AUS http://www.sail-world.com
Perfect sailing conditions on the eve of the Phuket Kings Cup regatta, with most of the fleet enjoying some gentle practice racing, 8-12 knots, flats seas and sunshine.

Despite the travel difficulties presented by the closure of the two Bangkok airports, there are 93 entries across 11 different divisons, for the 2008 regatta.

Race Charimancing Simon James said 'a testament to the strength of Asian sailing and of a very strong event.'

One of the toughest divisions being contested at this 22nd annual Phuket Kings Cup is the IRC Division 1.

Watching the crew work, there were a few stand outs. Matt Allen, the Commodore of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia is sailing the Beneteau 44.7 Ichi Ban. Aquavit 5, Helmut Schuttles's Beneteau 45 First also looked good. Mike Downard’s red hulled Farr Thailand Elite Switchblade will be a definite threat.

The Mark Prescott designed Firefly 850 class is again very strong, with eight of the Thai built multi-hulls set to blast around the course. Roger Kingdon’s Moto Inzi may start favourite again but she could be hard pressed as Voodoo Child, SEA Property and Mamba have also previously won the event.

The multihull division will be hot too; the fleet includes six Vietnamese built Corsairs.

The continuing growth of the Sunsail and Bare Boat charter fleets, some 26 boats, reminds us that Phuket is capital of the Asian charter fleet.

Absent from the water today was the Royal Thai Navy 1 Farr MRX. She was dismasted yesterday. Her skipper explained she was sailing in 13-14 knots when the forestay deck fitting broke away from the deck and the mast of the boat fell back to the deck. Fortunately none of the Navy crew was injured but the boat is out of the regatta.

The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, dedicated to H.M. the King Bhumibol Adulyadej, will feature a sail-past on Kata Bay and a special candle-lit tribute on his 81st birthday on Friday December 5th, to be held on Kata Beach.
