AMVER Awards Ship Co's after 25 Life-saving Years

by Sail-World on 16 Nov 2008

Coastguards of the world cannot reach a yacht in distress when thousands of nautical miles from land - but there is someone who just might be able to, and it's the nearest AMVER ship. Every year Sail-World reports sailing boats which have been assisted by AMVER ships, and now AMVER are celebrating 25 years of existence with some awards for the shipping companies that participate.

AMVER is short for the Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System, and is a voluntary , worldwide ship reporting system open to vessels of all flags and nations run by the U.S. Coast Guard. Companies participating in AMVER make their ships available as rescue assets in the event of an emergency. Last year, AMVER ships saved 450 lives while assisting many other ships in distress around the world.

On any given day there are 3,300 ships round the world available for search and rescue, and some have been for most of the 25 years of the organisation's life.

Prior to sailing, participating ships send a sail plan, indicating their port of departure, port of destination, course and speed to the AMVER computer centre. This data is processed, using a system of dead reckoning, and AMVER is able to project the position of each ship at any point during its voyage. In an emergency, any rescue coordination centre can request this data to determine the relative position of AMVER ships near a mariner, vessel, or aircraft in distress.

Sail-World joins the rest of the world in congratulating, not only the winners of the awards, but AMVER itself for its 25 years of life-saving work.
