Mike Campbell, winner on overall corrected handicap time of the 2007 Long Beach to Cabo San Lucas International Yacht Race, passed away Friday, Oct. 17 from Carcinoid Syndrome, a rare form of cancer.
Campbell, 63, raced his Kernan 70, Peligroso – co-owned with Dale Williams – under the Long Beach Yacht Club burgee in many ocean races including the Newport to Ensenada race, Transpac and the 2007 Cabo race.
Finishing last year’s race in 3 days 11 hours 54 minutes 35 seconds, Peligroso was only six hours behind first-to-finish Doug Baker’s Andrews 80, Magnitude 80. But when the handicap ratings were figured in, Peligroso corrected out to be the overall winner with Mag 80 in second.
Nine boats are scheduled to start this year in two divisions on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 12 noon, weather conditions permitting, coincidently, the same day Campbell would have turned 64.
After last year’s race, Campbell said, '[Doug] Baker, Peter Tong, Bob Lane, Brack Duker… we’ve been sailing together a long time, over 20 years now and sometimes we win one, then they win one. We have a lot of fun in these races.'
Campbell’s enthusiasm for racing and infectious ability to have fun will be greatly missed.
