Regatta 2002 - Australian JOG & Super 30 Championships Day 3

by Ron Farley on 24 Jan 2002
Day 3 was an interesting day at Regatta 2002, there were course changes, protests, and
for the Super 30’s Race 5 was abandoned when no yachts completed the course during
the time limit.
The program was for two offshore windward / leeward races with marks being laid off
Port Stephens, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting 15/20 knots from the N/NE
turning S/SE and Port Stephens RVCP reporting very disturbed seas in the race area,
Principal Race Officer Ken Mascord and the Race Committee moved racing inshore into
the less confused waters of Port Stephens.

The first race of the day got under way in an 8 knot SE breeze, Mumms the Word (Mal
Jones) was over the line early and had to go back, they lost 1:20, but recovered to take
the gun, 4 seconds ahead of Krakatoa (Rod Skellet). Hill PDA Bullet (Martin & Lisa Hill)
took the Super 30 win on corrected time. Fuji Film (Jeff Carter) and Outlaw (Tim Brown)
had a port / starboard incident on the first windward leg, resulting in Outlaw lodging a
protest, the subsequent hearing resulting in Fuji Film’s disqualification. In the JOG
Division Lake Macquarie yacht Ocean Racer Chaser (Ross Buxton) scored its second
win of the Regatta.

Results Race 4

JOG – 1st Ocean Racer Chaser (Ross Buxton), 2nd Comin Thru (Lindsay Whitton), 3rd
Marigot Bay (Alan Clark & Greg Daven)

Super 30 – 1st Hill PDA Bullet (Martin & Lisa Hill), 2nd Mumms The Word (Mal Jones),
3rd Krakatoa (Rod Skellet)

Race 5 – With the wind not filling in as expected, race 5 turned into a rather lengthy
affair, resulting in Mumms The Word seeking redress from the Protest Committee
regarding the race time limit. As a result the Protest Committee declared Race 5
abandoned for the Super 30 Division. In the JOG Division, the RMYC (Broken Bay)
Holland 30 Comin Thru (Lindsay Whitton) scored her first win of the Regatta, relegating
Ocean Racer Chaser to second.
