One of Australia's foremost marina builders, Bellingham Marine Australia, has been awarded certification as a 'low carbon marina industries business' by the Queensland government.

Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Desley Boyle congratulated the company on becoming the first marina industries company to gain certification under the initiative.

The certification is part of the Low Carbon Marina Initiative, a joint venture between the Carbon Reduction Institute and the Marina Industries Association of Australia (MIAA). The MIAA has set a goal of a 20 per cent reduction in the operational carbon footprint of Australian marinas by 2015.

Bellingham Marine Australia took the lead and embraced the Marina Industries Association’s Low Carbon Marina Initiative very quickly after it was announced.

It has been undertaking marina building in Australia for over ten years, and has been responsible for some of Australia's best known marinas: Gold Coast City Marina, Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and Royal Brighton Yacht Club, to name just a few.

Bellingham Marine General Manager, John Spragg said: ”For the past 50 years Bellingham has supported many initiatives to protect the environment. We have been heavily involved in a number of investigations proving that the presence of concrete floating docks enhances the ‘in water environment’.

'Now we see the emerging climate change threat of enormous significance to the marina industry, and the planet for that matter. I have never been to an ugly place where a marina has been built, they are generally built in stunning locations, and these treasures need to be preserved for many future generations to come.

He added, 'I sincerely hope our competitors in the marina manufacturing industry follow our lead'.
