Another stunning Sunshine Coast day greeted the large fleet of yachts celebrating the opening of the Mooloolaba Yacht Club’s 42nd sailing season last weekend.

Decorated with flags, bunting and with the crews wearing various forms of nautical wear, the 22 boats led by Coast Guard Mooloolaba's lead rescue vessel, paraded around Mooloolaba harbour in front of a large crowd gathered at the Wharf Tavern and on the balconies of many of the nearby houses.

Joining the fleet was Tanu, Cavalcade, Chagall, Crackajack, Flight of the Gull, Encore, Finisterre, Ultra Violet, Flagrant, Infra Red, White Pearl, JustDoIt, State of the Ark, Likeatiger, Shiraz, Soraya, Under Pressure, Bianca, Predator, Sanuk and Rescue 1.

The colourful parade was then followed by the traditional blessing of the fleet and mariner's prayer by retired Reverend Neville Geddes.

Following the blessing and short fun sail on Mooloolaba bay, more than 200 club members and their friends gathered back on the deck at the Wharf Tavern to continue the celebrations, hosted by club sponsor, the Wharf Tavern.

This year’s MYC sailing program includes the well-supported twice-weekly fun sails on Mooloolaba bay, the Wharf Tavern five-race blue water series, the Australia Day and Anzac weekend regattas, and the highly competitive Etchells class race series.

As the club settles into its home at the Wharf Tavern and with the strong support of large number of volunteers, it is experiencing a resurgence in boat and crew numbers. A program of cooperation with other sailing clubs on the coast and the planning of events which will increase the involvement of the local community in its sailing activities, the MYC members are looking forward to a busy and successful year.

Further information on the club and its sailing program can be found on the club website www.mooloolaba.yachting.org.au
