British Airways Round Jersey Race 2008 Jersey
The Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club's annual British Airways Round Jersey Race was held in mixed conditions Sunday. Starting in rain and strong winds at 9.30 a.m. an impressive fleet of 23 boats, including two French visitors, set off for the customary anticlockwise circumnavigation of the Island.
Darren Stower's Hobie Tiger, Cross-Eyed Moose, racing in the sport-catamaran class put in the fastest time of the day, finishing just a little over four hours later, well ahead of second place Andrew Hart sailing his Hobie 16, Hangover.
With an elapsed time of five and a quarter hours, Alan Brown's Melges 24, The Dog's ........!, won the sportsboat class from David Myatt's Melges, The Bee's .....!
Jean Le Gallet's Karbario V, a regular visitor from Granville, put in the fastest time in the IRC class, finishing a little over two minutes after The Dog's ........! It was David Jones' First 34.7 that was to carry the day, however, relegating Karibario to second place on corrected time with Alex Ohlsson's J92S taking third.
Club handicap class honours went, as is so often the case, to Nick Bailhache sailing his Moody 30, Filipene, finishing in a little under seven hours. A creditable second place went to French newcomer Jacques Minot's Gwez-Gwern edging Chris Weeks' Starlight 30, Cassiopeia into third place.
Although having started in somewhat less than pleasant weather, the fleet enjoyed fine conditions once round Grosnez and heading south through St Ouen's Bay and onwards to the finish line at St Helier Harbour.
The prizegiving was held in the RCIYC club-house that evening.
The Island's showpiece event, the Brewin Dolphin Jersey Regatta, the tenth of the combined clubs' regattas, is the next feature in the sailing programme, taking place from 5 to 7 September.
The Notice of Race and other details are available in the Island's yacht clubs and on www.rciyc.org and www.shyc.je
Entries to date include visitors from the UK, France and the sister Islands who will be pitting their wits against Jersey's racing fraternity over the three-day event. The Regatta is also generously supported by Jersey Tourism and Jersey Harbours who, amongst other things, will be providing complimentary berthing to competitors throughout the week.
