HM Bark Endeavour, the replica of James Cook’s ship of discovery, will depart its home port at the Australian National Maritime Museum, Darling Harbour, at 11 am tomorrow (Sat) on a two-month voyage to Brisbane and back.
The ship will proceed straight to Brisbane, arriving there on 27 August – in time to participate in Brisbane’s Riverfestival which starts on Friday, August 29. In Brisbane it will berth at Hamilton No 2 Wharf, near Portside Wharf, where it will be open for inspection from Friday, 29 August to Tuesday, 2 September, 10 am to 5 pm
The ship will depart Brisbane on 4 September and call at Coffs Harbour (11 – 19 September), Port Macquarie (23 September – 1 October) and Newcastle (7 – 14 October) and arrive back at the National Maritime Museum in Sydney on Saturday, 20 October.
On all sections of the voyage, Endeavour will be sailed by 16 professional crew members and a further 36 voyage crew, many of whom will be making the journey to learn about sailing an 18th century tall ship.
Cook’s original Endeavour, a converted coal carrier, became one of history’s most famous ships for a remarkable voyage in 1768-71.
Her commander and the scientists on board observed the Transit of Venus in Tahiti, explored vast areas of the southern Pacific Ocean, circumnavigated New Zealand and charted the east coast of Australia, taking possession of it for the King George III of England.
