Wot Chicks in Sweden at Lysekil Women’s Match

Wot chicks Team for Sweden Wot Chicks Media
Having recently returned from Marstrand, Sweden the Wot Chicks have headed back to Europe to undertake an intensive training weekend in Copenhagen and compete in the Lysekil Women’s Match ’08 (Sweden). The objective for the training was to hone skills in the DS37’s (the boat sailed in Lysekil) with three other top ranked teams.

The Wot Chick team for this event is Katie Spithill, Heidi Gordon, Nina Curtis, Jess Eastwell, Kristen Short and Stacey Jackson. This event is the first time this crew combination has sailed together, further highlighting the importance of the training weekend.

Lysekil sees 12 teams attending, seven of whom are currently ranked in the top 10 in the ISAF World Women’s Match Race Ranking. It is this regatta which will be used to contest the Women’s Match Racing World Championship in 2009.

Ending Day 1 with four wins and one loss Wot Chicks are off to a strong start having completed just under half their races in the first round robin.

Light easterly breezes early in the morning tested boat handling skills and tactics. Leading off the start for the first four races Wot Chicks extended their lead to win each match convincingly. The final race of the day saw a more aggressive pre-start, with a controversial penalty going the Wot Chicks way. Unfortunately, the incident ended in a down speed manoeuvre, which proved difficult to recover from in the light breezes.

Due to the round robin draw, Wot Chicks will complete their final six races on Thursday. Tomorrow they have a day to enjoy the Swedish sunshine, rivalling a Sydney summer’s day.

Wot Chicks would like to thank their sponsors Graeme Wood, co-founder of Wotif.com, SLAM and Rudy Project.
