Fortis Mandrake - line honours in HHYC Typhoon Series race 7 Hebe Haven Yacht Club
The hottest day of the year saw 51 boats come out to race on an Islands Course in Race 7 of the Typhoon Series. For some the heat and the delay in waiting for the wind to fill in was too much, so a noon start saw 49 boats off in five starts to race around the Islands off the Sai Kung coast.
Mandrake as expected got off too a great start whilst seeing two of her main rivals, Jaywalker and Full Metal Jacket, recalled for being OCS. The wind filled in to a steady 12 knots for the main part of the race, with the fleet racing between Bluff, Bay and Steep Islands over two different courses of some 20 and 16 miles, finishing at Little Palm Beach. Mandrake excelled, and finished with line honours, just prior to the forecast squally thunderstorms, which saw gusts of 30 knots and upwards for the unlucky few caught in the run in to the finish. Ambush eventually triumphed on corrected time, with Mandrake placed second ahead of the Kiwi entry Full Metal Jacket in IRC Division A, whilst in IRC Division B Calamansi, with line honours, triumphing over Dexter and Mojito.
