Mainship recently partnered with Boattest.com for some tests on the new Pilot 31, Expedition, and Pilot 45. The great thing about these tests is you get to see video of the boats in action as well as a complete ‘walk thru’ of the interior. Narrated by a smooth talking American, Captain Bob Smith, the video are an invaluable introduction to the Mainship range.

Captain Smith knows his stuff- he points out practical features, what could be improved, the kind of buyer that would suit each model, and changes Mainship have made from previous models and as a result of owner feedback. There’s information on what comes as standard and what’s an option; basic length, draft and beam data; how the layout works if you’re entertaining and other handy observations.

They’re a great way of deciding whether a boat is likely to suit you or not. Even if you’re planning to make a bee-line for Mainship at the Sydney International Boat Show, having a quick look at the video first will familiarise you with the boat’s layout and features. And if you’re going to be driving a Mainship in the near future, you’ll appreciate Captain Smith’s detailed run down on the helm controls and electronics.

As well as the video there is complete boat test performance data, tables showing what is optional and what is standard, complete specs, a written Captain’s report and a list of key features.

BoatTest.com says that:

‘The new Mainship 31 Pilot replaces the 30 Pilot and offers an option to the cruising family that wants more features at a price that fits into the budget better. For instance, with the 31 Pilot you get a transom door that opens out to the full width swim platform. Now you can board easier as well as you have a convenient way to get to and use the swim platform from the cockpit. This model also has a cockpit galley that maximizes the interior space, allowing better use for evening Link to Expedition Trawler test video

BoatTest.com says that:

‘The Expedition opens up a new design for Mainship and replaces the 40 Trawler in that series. It has an optional summer grill that will certainly be popular, especially for those sunset al-fresco dinners with your favorite mate. Under the cover of the flying bridge, you have room to serve an entire group for dinner or show off your favorite anchorage while serving wine and cheese. Inside, one of the changes in the transition was to move the galley to port opening up the salon to more entertainment space. A new 26' LCD TV is standard mounted in the port side wall.’

BoatTest.com says that:

‘Mainship’s new 45 Pilot is their newest flagship of next generation trawlers. The 45 has true stairways to the flying bridge, not a ladder. The extended bridge deck adds entertainment space or room to set up a couple chairs and enjoy the view. The galley down design has been outfitted with a double drawer refrigerator and a double drawer freezer. With a standard 777 gallon fuel capacity, you will pass up many fuel docks on your cruise.’

A look at The Ocean Cleanup and its the 30 Cities Program The cliche goes that one should avoid meeting one's heroes, as there's always a chance that the flesh-and-blood person might not live up to expectations. While I've never met Boyan Slat, I'd gladly take this risk.

And the rest of the line is not toil and trouble, but quadruple, then another double… On the eve of the 100th Fastnet that has attracted some 464 entries, I heard of one entry in this record fleet that seemed so very apt. Not only because it includes the Commodore of the RORC, but because it combines two Brits and two Aussies.
