New Zealand wins gold and bronze in Splash Worlds

by Richard Gladwell, Sail-World on 26 Jul 2008
Ben Lutze (NZL) 2008 Splash World Champion Event Media

New Zealand sailors have won the gold and bronze medals in the 2008 World Splash Championships being sailed in Tavira, Portugal.

Ben Lutze (NZL) is the 2008 World Champion, with George Lane (NZL) taking the Bronze medal. Gilles Cleeren (BEL was third.

100 sailors from seven countries competed in the event, including a 13 strong NZ team, six New Zealanders finished in the top ten overall.

This report on the final day of the World Championships from the NZ Spalsh Association:

25/7, final day, same people, different position, George 2 first and Ben two seconds. What a final race and follow on. Start, looked like a number of boats over at the pin, after about 20 seconds, individual recall flag goes up, by which stage, the sailors are gone - should have be been cancelled and restarted - it should have been a general recall. Race finishes, the Belgium coaches have done the numbers, their 2221 sailor needs to finish in top 7 and Ben in second. Ben finishes 2 and 2221 finishes 6th, he is very happy. We all head back to shore, start packing up and then the OCS go up, 2221 was OCS, along with some of ours, but not the ones which were over. Result - looks like Ben has won and George second - still be confirmed. We should have country one as well. In the end could be ok result - thanks to some so-so race management. Go the Taipa Kid
