Overall winner to be named this morning at Constitution Dock

by Peter Campbell on 31 Dec 2001
The provisional Overall Winner of the 57th Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, along with most Divisional winners and placegetters, will be officially announced today at a traditional ceremony near Hobart’s historic Constitution Dock.

The Commodore’s of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, Hans Sommer and Robert “Biddy” Badenach, will be joined by Hobart’s Lord Mayor Rob Valentine for the presentation of the Tattersall’s Cup and crew medallions to the winning yacht.

Meanwhile, at 6am today all but five of the 16 yachts still racing had reached Tasman Island or the Derwent River, with Magic and She II nearest to the finish having rounded the Iron Pot shortly after 5am.

However, winds are very light in southern Tasmanian waters and it may be hours yet before these two boats and the nine others in Storm Bay reach the finish line.

At this stage, out of the 75 boats that set sail from Sydney Harbour on Boxing Day, 26 December, 40 have completed the 630 nautical mile course, 18 have retired and one was declared a non-finisher.
