The Herreshoff Marine Museum/America’s Cup Hall of Fame announces its 2008 Lecture Series program schedule. This year’s series of four presentations features both traditional sailing craft and the Herreshoff built NC-4, the first plane to cross the Atlantic. All lectures are held in the Museum’s Hall of Boats, One Burnside St., Bristol, RI.
On Thursday August 21st at 7 p.m. Museum President Halsey Herreshoff will discuss 'The Surviving Herreshoff Schooners'. The Herreshoff Manufacturing Company produced nine steel-hulled schooners during the period 1902-1922. Designed to compete both in the United and States and Europe, some of these great schooners – restored or replicas - still sail today.
This is the first presentation in the Museum’s 2008 Lecture Series. Other lectures scheduled are: September 16th: 'Sloop: Restoring My Family’s Wooden Sailboat': lecture and book signing by author Daniel Robb, whose family restored a Herreshoff 12 1/2; October 14th:
'Herreshoff Built NC-4: First to Fly the Atlantic': the amazing story of the first transatlantic flight by author/historian David Crocker. On November 11th noted yachting cinematographer and lecturer John Biddle will present the annual Carlton J. Pinheiro Lecture: 'Glorious High Spots of the 12 Meter Era', featuring historic footage of the 12 Meters that competed for the America’s Cup from 1958 through 1987.
All lectures begin at 7 p.m. and are held in the Museum’s Hall of Boats, located at the corner of Hope and Burnside Streets, Bristol, RI.
