by Media/Sail-World.com on 17 Jul 2008
2008 European Laser Championship in Nieuwpoort, Belgium Thom Touw http://www.thomtouw.com

No change in the leaders of the Laser Standard and the women's Laser Radial after day two at the European Championships in Nieupoort, Belgium. Sari Multala of Finland once again winning both races in the Laser Radial fleet keeping her place at the top of the leaderboard on just four points.

Also on the Women's leaderboard Sophie de Turckheim of France keeps second place on eight points closely followed by Evi Van Acker of Belgium in third place with ten points.

Day two of racing saw two races sailed in overcast weather conditions. During the first race the south-westerly wind diminished from about 12 knots to less than 10 knots. Again, there were several general recalls in the second race of the day.

In the Laser Standard fleet, Australian Tom Slingsby stays in first place with a first and a second while Britain´s Paul Goodison moved up from third to second place, four points off the leader. Zbogar Vasilijk (SLO) is third.

Britain has two other sailors in the first ten of the Laser event, Nick Thompson in fifth place and Robert Godwin in ninth. In the Women's Radial event, Charlotte Dobson is the best placed in seventh overall, while Andrea Brewster is 17th and Penny Clark is 26th. Clark won race 3 but was then black flagged in race 4 so will have to wait until the discard kicks in to get back in contention.

The Men´s Laser Radial event did have a change of leader. Zemke Wojciech of Poland added a first and a third to take the lead from Britain's Jon Emmett, who now trails Wojciech by four points. Michail Aristeidis of Greece is tied in third place with Ben Knoppelarr of the Netherlands.

In fifth place in the Radial is Martin Evans, who had a win in race 4 and James Spencer also gets into the top group in ninth place.
