The Kellett Shield is the culmination of the development of crew work and fleet racing skills in the first few weeks of the Advanced Squad's winter training program. This years event was held on Saturday 31st May 2008.
The format for the event is six races with the crew of three rotating all roles, including helming two races each. This resulted in amazingly tight racing and on-water umpire Andrew Baglin was called upon many times to adjudicate close incidents.
Racing started with a north west breeze of five to eight knots, which unfortunately dropped out in the third race. The race committee took the opportunity to AP and have a lunch break while the course was reset as the southerly breeze set in.
The final three races were completed quickly in freshening SE breeze. Racing was tight with each crew alternating roles enabling all squad members to experience each position on the boat under racing conditions.
Line 7 crewed by Will Ryan, Ted Hackney and Jay Griffin had a convincing win in the regatta placing first in four of the six races. Ryan commented that his crew did a fantastic job especially when placed in the unfamiliar role of steering the Elliott 6.

In second place was Bavaria Yachts crewed by Evan Walker, Josie Roper and Daniel Watterson who finished close behind Line 7 by 4 points. Third place went to Club Marine crewed by Olivia Price, Cat Trew and David Mitchell.
'With only 24 points the difference between first and seventh place, the standard of racing is very competitive and we look forward to tight match racing in the regattas in weeks to come,' said Sailing Manager Justine Kirkjian.
The Kellett Shield, donated by ISAF vice president and YA board member, David Kellett, marks the end of the fleet racing component of the CYCA Advanced Squad program and the beginning of the next 6 weeks match racing training. Brad Kellett who is one of the founding members of the YSA joined the squad at the barbeque and presented the Kellett Shield to the winners.
