Portugual takes Day 1 of Mens RS-X Europeans

by RS:X Event media on 5 May 2008
Barbara Kendall (NZL) racing on Day 1 of the 2008 RS:X Europeans, Brest, France Claude Breton

Joao Rodrigues (POR 75) was nothing if not consistent to day putting in a second and a win to lead the Men’s European RS:X Championship being sailed in Brest, France.

In the Womens Open, Kate Ellingham is the top placed New Zealander, lying 13th overall after two races having scored an eighth and 21st placing. Barbara Kendall was scored OCS in the first race of the Womens Open and finished ninth in the second race to lie in 31st overall. The third NZ competitor, Steffanie Williams is 41st overall having scored 3th and 42nd today.

Second overall in the Mens Open is Julien Bontemps (FRA 6) just one point behind with Nikos Kaklamanakis (GRE 9) two points further adrift. Nick Dempsey (GBR 1) makes up the top 4 with 9 points.

In the continuing story of the Dutch qualification struggle, it appears right now to be a one horse race. Remember that to qualify for the Games in China, either Dorian Van Rijsselberge (NED 8) or Casper Bouman (NED 52) have to finish in the top 6 at one of 4 regattas during this European season. They both managed that in Hyeres.

Now at the Europeans. Casper seems to have already blown his chances to make the standard . Standing 32nd overall, having scored an 18th and a 14th today only a miracle will get him back into contention. Dorian on the other hand, is very much in line to do the business. 7th in the overall standing with a 5th and a 7th he must be pretty satisfied with his first day and looking forward to a late start tomorrow (1300hrs).

Overall a good first day’s racing, if not a little on the long side for everyone!

Pauline Perrin (FRA) takes the second race European Championship

Pauline Perrin (FRA 81) took the gun for the second women’s race of the European championship which must be a big boost after a poor first race.

The big winner of the day however must be Faustine Merret (FRA 9) who is racing on her home race track and finished 3rd in this race to giver herself the overall lead after day one. Equal second, one point behind, Charline Picon (FRA 4) and Marina Alabau (ESP 5) are clearly going to do all they can to stop Faustine from winning ‘at home’. Something she would dearly love to do.

Eight points back Alessandra Sensine (ITA 25) lies in 4th overall. Her damage limitation strategy has clearly been a success after sarting the day feeling less than ‘on top form’.

It is likely that the women will be first onto the water tomorrow. I’ll get back to you with the details as soon as the race comittee have made their decision.

Womens Race 1 - European Championships

Marina Alabau (ESP 5) took the first race of the Women’s European Championship with an incredible jibe at the last mark in the slalom end to beat Charline Picon (FRA 4) and Faustine merret (FRA 9)

Just off the back of the leading group who all finished within 21 seconds was Bryony Shaw (GBR 94) who was always threatening but not quite able to get in amongst the top three.

There is a long way for this regatta to go and already we are seeing the expected front runners laying down their markers at the front of the fleet. Alessandra Sensini (ITA 25) despite my earlier report did take part in the race to finish a creditable 5th. And the reason for her change of mind?

The wind has filled in to such an extent that we almost have planing conditions up wind now. Meaning Alessandra would not have had to try and expend a serious amount of energy and delay her complete recovery.

The women have been held on the water and will start their second race as soon as possible (Probably around 1830 hrs). After their start the two groups of men will be called out for their second race. The last possible time for a race start is 1930hrs.

Men Race 1 - European Championships

Samuel Launay and Julien Bontemps win the first pair of races on the first day of the European Championship

Meanwhile the women wait ashore not really relishing the prospect of racing in the light stuff. Alessandra Sensini (ITA 25) has already decided not to go out for the first women’s race as she is ‘not feeling brilliant’ to put it mildy. Anyway, she will re-consider if there is a second women’s race run today.

Just a little note on some serious background stress this morning… I got into the office at 0830hrs to find Pascal our resident on line scoring guru spinning out because none of his mobile phones would connect to the internet! Effectively this would have meant that the online scoring system was unusable.

Pretty disasterous, you will agree I’m sure… well luckily for us racing was postponed and by the time the men were called on to the water, the trouble had been tracked out to the network provider. Les Crocodiles de L’Elorn was in a tiny area where the network was down.

They worked perfectly yesterday during the practice race. They worked 100 metres either side of the club. They even work on the water (except at mark 3) but they don’t work in the office! To come to these conclusions involved some desperate hours of testing, phone calls and deduction but anyway all’s well that ends well.

Phew! Disaster management has now been stood down and normal service has been restored…
