One of the great gatherings of the Sydney yachting and maritime fraternity is the Sydney Heritage Fleet's annual fundraising dinner, to be held this year at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron on Thursday, May 15.
It is an opportunity for those who enjoy using Sydney Harbour to support the Sydney Heritage Fleet and its many volunteers in their ongoing efforts to restore, maintain and record the maritime history of our great port city.
The dinner will be an exciting and interesting night with fine food and excellent wines, for which the Squadron is famous, with an interesting guest speaker in Captain Christopher Rynd, master of the new Cunard liner, Queen Victoria, which recently visited Sydney.
MC for the dinner will be the highly entertaining and award winning comedian, Paul Martell.
Of great interest to yachtsmen and other boat owners will be the auctioning of a commissioned painting by noted marine artist Ian Hansen, with an estimated value of $10,000.
The purchaser will have the right to nominate the subject for Ian Hanson's painting.
Other auction lots include a seven night cruise aboard SPV Star Clipper for two people cruising out of Phuket, Thailand, with return economy class air tickets, fully catered Sydney Harbour cruises and a four hour Harbour cruise aboard the barque James Craig for up to 180 people.
Sydney Heritage Fleet celebrates its 43rd birthday this year and survives only through the generosity of its donors and the activities of its volunteers. It receives no direct government funding from any source.
Yachtsmen on Sydney Harbour will know of the Fleet's activities through regular sightings of some of their heritage listed vessels which, in addition to James Craig, include the 1902 steam launch Lady Hopetoun, the 1902 steam tug Waratah, the delightful 1903 schooner Boomerang and several other smaller vessels.
The Fleet volunteers are currently restoring the 1926 coastal steamer John Oxley and are appealing for boaties to support them by attending the Dinner.
If you can attend this event you are assured of a great night out. Tickets are available by contacting Fran Iacono on or frances@lehman.com.au
