215 enjoy the sun at Glyn Charles Pursuit race

by Gerald New on 27 Apr 2008
Close quarters at the Glyn Charles Pursuit 2008 Around The Cans http://www.aroundthecans.co.uk

Ideal conditions for the Glyn Charles Pursuit Race at Hayling Island SC on Saturday. A record entry of 215 boats took part. Ten years on from when Glyn was tragically lost in the Sydney Hobart Race, the race held in his memory has grown each year with the generous support of the many sponsors, sailors and class associations who get behind the event.

The 2008 race was no exception with pledges of support rapidly coming in, and many of Glyn’s former crews and team mates racing too. A fun, competitive race around the cans, Glyn’s race attracted entries from all dinghy classes and ages, pitting their wits to win a stunning array of prizes, which were spread across the fleet, from back to front.

Winners were Dicken Maclean and Nicola Groves sailing an RS200 from Island Barn SC. Second another RS200, Katrina Gilbert and Eluned Jones from Frenshan Pond SC and in third place the Merlin Rocket of Mike and Jane Calvert.

Neilson Active Holidays pledged a Beachplus Club holiday for two people, worth up to £2000.

Further fantastic prizes included:

· An all expenses paid trip, for up to 2 crew, to race on board Graham Walker’s classic yacht 'Rowdy', a 1916 Herreshoff, at the Regate Royale at Cannes in September

· A week for 5 people in luxury Italian villa, Casa Glyn, in Tuscany, donated by Merrion Charles Private Travel Consultant, (and sister of Glyn), www.casaglyn.com (worth £2000)

· A Laser 1 mainsail by LaserPerformance

· A day with the TV production crew of Sunset + Vine/APP at a choice of a major British sporting event, including The Grand National, The Derby, Royal Ascot or a UEFA Cup football match.

· The Daily Sail Top Foiler prize - £50 cash prize to the first foiling Moth or foiling RS600, + a cheque for £200 presented by Daily Sail, on behalf of the winner, to the John Merricks Sailing Trust

· Family weekend at SailLaser, by LaserPerformance

· £600 of clothing vouchers by Gill

· Over £400 of RYA books and vouchers

· £200 Voucher for Dubarry Marine Collection footwear, clothing or accessories
