Youthsail on course in fresh winds

by Kirsty Laws, Sandspit YC on 23 Apr 2008
Andrew Maloney (NZL) - Final day Mens and Youths Laser Radial Worlds Richard Gladwell www.photosport.co.nz

A successful day's racing was had at Algies Bay by the participants on the first day of racing at Youthsail 2008, the selection regatta for the ISAF Youth World Sailing Championship.

Racing is on schedule with three races completed on each course. Fresh shifty winds made racing testing for New Zealand's elite youth sailors.

Sam Meech of Tauranga leads Jason Saunders and reigning World Youth Laser Radial Champion Andy Maloney by one point. In the Laser Radial, 2007 ISAF Youth Worlds representative Cushla Hume-Merry has a comfortable lead in the girls' fleet, and is on equal points with Whangarei's Spencer Loxton overall.

In the 420 class 2008 National Champions Paul Snow-Hansen and Ben Goodwin finished the day with a one-point lead over home town favourites Francisco Lardies and David Hazard, with Thomas Saunders and 2007 Optimist World Champion Chris Steele another point behind in 3rd. Alexandra Maloney and Bianca Barbarich-Bacher of Murray's Bay are the first girls. The RSX fleet is dominated by Josh Nixon with three firsts, while Jazmine Lynch leads the girls' fleet, in 4th place overall.

On the B course Sam Bullock of Tauranga is in 1st place in the inaugural Asia Pacific Starling Championships, followed by Molly Meech, Gye Simkin from New Plymouth, and Claudia Pierce. Oskar Rorvik leads the P-class while Ben Lutze of Taipa has a comfortable lead in the Splash.
