When the boat is heeling past 30 degrees and you're steering by you toes or stretching uncomfortably, have you ever longed for a second steering wheel? But the boat's too small? Well, have we got a deal for you!
Danish company Jefa have developed a swinging pedestal system, which seems too simple to be true – but isn't that so with all the best ideas?
The swinging pedestal is a very smart solution in creating a multiple steering position with the minimum in space lost in the cockpit, ideal for the cruising yacht.
The pedestal can swing from port to starboard and can be fixed in three positions.
The wheel is made of high strength aluminium, keeping the weight low.
The conventional way of steering bigger race/cruising yacht has always been to use a twin pedestal configuration. The downside of this solution for the marginally sized yacht is the lost space in the cockpit – if, indeed the wheels would fit at all, the narrow passage between the wheels and the complicated steering mechanics under deck.
The swing mechanism on the Jefa product is operated by a foot pedal. The pedal switch only has to be opened by foot and the wheel will click then into the
next position when reached.
A encapsulated drain solves the water problem, which has been carefully thought out so that no water can enter the boat.
Even the under deck solution is much easier than twin wheel steered systems.
