Western Australia's world-class sailing museum will open to the public by next Tuesday. The Australian Sailing Museum, on Ormsby Terrace in Mandurah, a short drive south of Perth, will be officially opened by Governor General Major General Michael Jeffery and sailing icon Rolly Tasker on Monday.
Hailed as the biggest and most extensive sailing museum in Australia, the museum incorporates the America’s Cup Museum and the Peninsula Art Gallery. Museum general manager Greg Thomas said the museum had something for everyone, not just sailing enthuasists.
It includes an extensive display of models, a history of Australian sailing from the 1800s, marine art and architecture, flags and wax figures of famous American and Australian sailors. There is also a replica of the America’s Cup and an Olympic sailor’s honour board.
Other attractions include the Boardwalk Café, which opened in December, a print shop and Rolly Tasker Sails Australia with sails and ropes on display and for sale. Mr Thomas said Mr Tasker, a local resident, had long dreamt about opening a sailing museum in Mandurah and it was his legacy.
The official opening will also include the launch of Tasker’s biography, Sailing to the Moon, written by best-selling author Roland Perry.
The museum will be open seven days a week and costs $10 for adults, $5 for children and concessions and $25 for a family pass.
