Day 4- Womens Laser Radials - Expletives Deleted

Light winds have again caused a delay in racing in the 2008 Womens Laser Radial World Championship.

Racing on day 4 of the event was scheduled to get underway today, Tuesday at 1000hrs. However light and patchy winds again plagued the Hauraki Gulf, and the postponement flag flew for much of the day.

The day started fairly overcast but with cloud moving indicating wind at a higher level, and the expectation was that three races should be possible. However the skies cleared as the day progressed and hopes were that three races would be possible.

The fleet was called out onto the race course with a 6kt south westerly blowing, and and a start on the first of the three races got underway at 1100hrs.

With the first race completed another round of the old game 'hurry up and wait' ensued as officials went further and further out in the Hauraki Gulf in search of a stable breeze.

Race 2 got underway in an 8kt breeze from 180 degrees with clear skies and bright sunshine. Seas are were very flat.

The second race ended in a sensation when the top Kiwi sailor, Jo Aleh, who was leading by a leg and had rounded the last mark with 100 metres or so left to the finish had race officials abandon the race when she was almost a leg ahead. Her immediate comment on the water was 'is it illegal to lead by that much?'

Sail-World spoke briefly to Aleh after the race and she claimed there was 20 minutes left to run on the time limit. Other sources confirmed the reason for the race abandonment was the weather, which was patchy over the rest of the course. the remainder of the fleet were still running at the leeward Mark 5, but almost there, leaving a reach and short tide assisted beat to the finish.

To many on the course the officials decision was very surprising, and Aleh seemed to be seriously disadvantaged by the call.

It is know known at the time of whether she will claim redress.

The breeze has now moved in from the east (a light seabreeze) and the abandoned Race 5 has now got underway. Curently Jo Aleh is in fourth place at the first windward mark, trailing Romero Susana (ESP), Maes Laura (BEL) and Chernova Anastasia (RUS).

The fleet allocations for today's racing is as follows:
