Day 3- Off to a sensational start

by Richard Gladwell, Sail-World on 17 Mar 2008
Paige Railey (USA - 193020) squeezes past the Committee Boat on Day 3 of the Womens Laser Radial Worlds incurring a RRS42 penalty Richard Gladwell www.photosport.co.nz
Light winds have put all racing on hold at Takapuna for the third day of the Womens Laser Radial World Championships.

Conditions on the Hauraki Gulf were glassy with no wind but got underway in a 6-7kt northerly breeze.

The second fleet got underway with a sensation when USA sailor Paige Railey was penalised for a RRS42 infringement, close to the startline. Sail-World understands the penalty was for pumping (with her body movement). Railey was the most leeward competitor at the pin end and may have incurred her penalty as she squeezed around the leeward starting vessel.

Railey was forced to sail off the course and retire from the race, as this is her second penalty for an infringement of RRS42.

If she infringes again in this regatta she will be not be excluded from the World Championship as happened to her once previously in the 2006 World Championships in USA. Instead she (and another competitor who infringes more than once) are excluded from that race.

At the midway stage another US sailor, Anna Tunnicliffe is leading the yellow fleet by a substantial margin.

In the blue fleet, Lijlia Xu (CHN) lead by a comfortable margin of 200 metres, for most of the race with the with the fleet strung out behind her in a procession.

Currently the regatta is on hold while the official wait for the wind to settle. The sea breeze was extinguished by an approaching land breeze from the west coast, and there was a decision to be made at 1800hrs local time as to whether a further race would be sailed.

We have been advised that there will be no further racing today. Currently only three of a possible six races have been sailed, and officials will start racing tomorrow and attempt to sail a further three races.

The Finals were due to start on Wednesday and the regatta finishes on Thursday.
