Shroud frayed? - Where's your Shroud Kit?

by Des Ryan on 1 Mar 2008
Shroud Kit SW
For the cruising sailor, so often away from the protection of the company of other boats or the overseeing organisation of the racing system, a shroud that it beginning to part is one of the most frightening problems to find on an ocean inspection. Carrying spare wire on board is a solution, but this is not only expensive, the wire required is large, heavy, will rust in the sea air, and the connectors must be carried as well. Then there is the process of the repair – complex and time consuming. Now Colligo Marine has a solution:

Colligo Marine tells us that their lightweight, rustproof, reusable Synthetic SystemsTM Emergency Shroud Kit is an easy to use temporary replacement for broken shrouds or stays up to 50 feet long (up to 1/4 inch wire) - at about half the cost.

The kit stores in a small, waterproof, re-sealable plastic bag that can be stowed anywhere on board.

The Shroud Kit contains enough low stretch 7 mm Dynex Dux UHMWPE line (15,000 lb breaking strength) to make a 50 foot shroud or stay in about 15 minutes, with the enclosed splicing instructions. One Line Terminator is pre-spliced while the other included Terminator can be spliced to the length needed. Line Terminators enable each end to be lashed on with the enclosed 20 feet of synthetic lashing line, or pinned to hardware if possible. Chafe guard is included for spreader ends. The kit can replace shrouds or stays up to ¼ inch. MSRP is $US349.00.

For more information about the Colligo Synthetic SystemsTM Emergency Shroud Kit and other Colligo Marine products, visit www.colligomarine.com or call 1+480.703.3675.

The appeal of offshore
Is there still appeal? Have we made it too onerous? Why would someone take it up now? I had been pondering. Yes. Marquee events have no issue attracting entrants. Middle Sea, Transpac, Cape to Rio, Fastnet, and Hobart all spring to mind instantly, but what of the ‘lesser' races? Lots of boats in pens (slips) a lot of the time
