The inaugural BMW Auckland Regatta Week opened its account with the weather gods today delivering ideal sailing conditions for the 78 yachts taking part.

The regatta, organised jointly by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club, is being sailed off Eastern Beach, Auckland.

Crews in the eight keel boat and multi-hull divisions revelled in the sunshine and the northerlies that built from nine knots in the morning for the first of the two back-to-back windward/leeward races, to 15 knots for the afternoon harbour race.

The only drama of the day came when the 8.5m catamaran Hard Drive, skippered by Bruce Williamson, took a tumble and flipped during the first windward/leeward race. The yacht has suffered structural damage and was towed ashore. The crew of four was unhurt, but they will be unable to continue in the regatta.

The divisional winners of this three-day event will go on to compete for the BMW Sailing Cup, to be held off East Coast Bays on March 4 – 5. Crews will race in identical MRX-class yachts and racing will consist of 10 windward, leeward sprints and then a harbour race with the winner decided on points.
