Haileybury College’s number one team led by its captain Cameron Dale headed the leader board after five races in the Victoria Harbour inter-school teams racing regatta, which began at Docklands today.
Haileybury won five races on the trot and emerged as a hot favourite to qualify for next April’s finals.
Sponsored by Lend Lease’s Victoria Harbour and the City of Melbourne, the regatta is being staged as a series of two day events and it is sailing’s equivalent to rowing’s prestigious Head of the River.
Haileybury College’s sailing co ordinator Allan Goodall says, “I’m very pleased with today’s results because the our three boat 1st team that includes Cameron Dale (year 11) and his sister Alison (year 9) had to claw back from several penalties and premature starts to score their five wins. “Our number two team fought back late in the day to be just one win back””
A group of schools are in close pursuit including:
Woodleigh School – Baxter – 4 wins 1 loss
Haileybury Boys College #2 team - 4 wins 1 loss
Christian College – Geelong - 3 wins 2 losses
Geelong Grammar – #1 team 3 wins 2 losses
Teams will vie for the title of Head of Victoria Harbour and the right to represent the Big V at this year’s Australian Schools titles in Sydney next July.
Racing continues on Friday 22 February to wrap up the first set of selection trials.
Selection trials dates (for 24 invited schools) on Victoria Harbour at Docklands:
Thursday 21 and Friday 22nd February from 9.30- 3.30pm approx each day
Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 March 2008
The final twelve teams will sail off to decide State Champion School on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 April 2008
