Brits face 470 Medal race show-down

Congestion at the marks in light weather - Day 5 2008 470 Worlds Christine Hansen

In the 470 World Championships currently being staged at Mordialloc Sailing Club, Port Phillip, Britain has interest in both the men’s and women’s medal races on Wednesday.

2006 470 World Champions Nic Asher and Elliott Willis could find themselves with a medal in bizarre circumstances having been awarded an average 6.70 score for races eight, nine and 10 following their collision with Australian pair Mathew Belcher and Nicholas Behrens in race eight.

Asher and Willis, who posted a ninth and fifth in the final two races for an average to be formulated in combination with their pre-crash sixth place in race seven, sit in third overall behind Portuguese duo Alvaro Marinho and Miguel Nunes and Gideon Kliger and Udi Gal (ISR).

Only three points cover the three leading Men and with double points available in the final race, everything to sail for.

A discarded 19th and 17th saw Athens silver medallists Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield drop from third to seventh.

Meanwhile despite a medal looking a huge call, Christina Bassadone and Saskia Clark performed awesomely under the pressure of potentially missing the cut for the medal race to post two superb first places in races 11 and 12 to claw their way up from 16th to ninth to book their spot in the final race.
