Hamish Pepper and Carl Williams in lead after Day 1 at Miami OCR Lynn Fitzpatrick
Biscayne Bay, Miami turned on beautiful blue skies for day one of the Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta (OCR). Hamish Pepper and Carl Williams had an impressive start competing in the Star class.
The day started off perfectly with Pepper/Williams winning race one. However race two proved to be a little more challenging going over the finish line in third place.
Pepper said “It was a tricky day with light winds of 5-8 knots, so we were happy to come off the water with a first and a third.”
“We started well today and were able to sail to our game plan, which gave us two good results. Race one we led all the way around with Flavio Marazzi from Switzerland hot on our heels making it a tense race.”
“Race two we made a couple of little errors at the top of the first leg to windward, causing us to lose touch with the first and second boats. We were third around the top mark and unable to make up ground on the leaders for the remainder of the race.”
Again OCR proves to be a popular event attracting sixty six competitors from twenty three nations. With such a large fleet the competitors are split into two groups, they each complete six races before being placed into either the Gold or Silver fleet. From here there is another four races to find the top ten competitors for the medal race.
